The flowers of this camellia are quite symmetrically formed from lots of deep red petals, which almost have a silvery sheen to their wax-like texture. They appear for a couple of months from the onset of spring, and they really look superb against the backdrop of the deep green glossy leaves. This acid-loving evergreen makes a handsome stand-alone specimen, but it can also be used to form an informal hedge.

  • Garden care: To prevent damage to the emerging buds and flowers protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun. Water established plants in dry weather to prevent bud drop. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again in June. Top-dress annually with shredded bark or well-rotted leaf mould. After flowering lightly trim or prune any branches that spoil the appearance of the plant.
