This shrub is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: any well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: hardy

Its neat, columnar habit means that this euonymus is primarily grown for hedging, however it will also make a good foil for more ornamental flowering shrubs and would even make a good alternative to formal box hedging. It is compact too, which also makes it ideal for growing in containers on the patio. Other noteworthy features include the young leaves, which are paler green when they first emerge, creating a pretty (if temporary) two-tone effect. Green flowers are also produced in late spring and early summer amongst the foliage, although these are very small so often overlooked.

  • Garden care: Tip prune young plants in mid to late spring to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
  • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
