This bulb dies back after flowering each year and enters a period of rest ahead of regrowth the following season.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to September
  • Hardiness: half hardy (will need winter protection)

Showy umbels of exotic-looking, scarlet-red funnel-shaped flowers with gangly stamens appear on leafless stems in summer. Red spider lily, a bulbous perennial, makes a bold and quirky statement dotted around summer border plantings or on the patio in pots and containers.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs in April and May, ensuring the top of the bulb is exposed, spacing each bulb 10-15cm apart. Water in and keep hydrated whilst in active growth. Frost protection may be required in late spring with a double layer of horticultural fleece.
  • Harmful if eaten
