Pieris japonica 'Katsura' (PBR)
lily-of-the-valley shrub
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained acid soil or ericaceous compost
- Rate of growth: slow-growing
- Flowering period: April to May
- Hardiness: fully hardy
This acid-loving evergreen shrub is particularly eye-catching when the new foliage emerges a deep mahogany-red. At around the same time, clusters of small, urn-shaped pink and white flowers start to appear at the tips of the stems - and together the flowers and the coloured foliage put on a pretty dazzling display. - Garden care: Add composted pine needles or ericaceous compost when planting. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of composted pine needles or bark each year around the base of the plant in early spring. Remove the faded flower-heads in late spring along with any frost-damaged foliage.
- Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
