This herb dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This low-growing, semi-evergreen herb has been used for both medicinal and culinary purposes for a couple of centuries. The leaves are very aromatic and are said to be able to help aid digestion and bee stings, but they also can be used to flavour meat dishes, marinades and stuffing. Its also a pretty plant, so is ideal for patio pots or front of border positions.

  • Garden care: Grow in a warm, sheltered spot in relatively poor soils and keep pinching back the tips to encourage new growth.
