Quintessentially British and delicious when eaten freshly picked from the garden, strawberries have long been a summer favourite. They are equally happy in vegetable beds or herbaceous borders, as well as being potted up into tubs or hanging baskets provided they get lots of sun and adequate water. If grown in the border you should apply a generous layer of straw mulch or place strawberry mats under the plants as the fruits start to develop to prevent them coming into contact with the soil. The runners are sent out bare root, so should be planted out as soon as possible after delivery. Although they will look a little dry initially, they should put on lots of new growth as soon as the weather warms up in spring.

In this collection you will receive ten runners of each of the following varieties.
  • strawberry 'Cupid' (PBR):
  • Glossy orange-red fruits, which have a delicious and juicy flesh, appear late in the season and will be ready to harvest in July. Renowned for its vigorous growth and resistance to disease, ‘Cupid’ is ideal for oragnic gardeners. Grows to 20cm.
  • strawberry ‘Darselect’ (PBR) :
  • From early June aromatic, very sweet fruits, with a deep red skin and a firm, light red flesh, can be harvested from amongst the dark green foliage of this early-fruiting strawberry. Easy to harvest and good for storing. Grows to 20cm.
  • strawberry 'Sonata' (PBR) :
  • Firm-fleshed, uniformly shaped, large fruits with a deliciously sweet flavour can be harvested from late June. This mid-season cultivar copes better than most in adverse weather conditions like high temperatures and heavy rain. Grows to 15cm.

  • Garden care: Dig the area in autumn, incorporating a good amount of compost or well-rotted manure. Rake in a general fertiliser, such as Growmore in to the area just before planting. Keep plants well watered and remove any flowering shoots that appear. Mulch the crowns in January or February. It is best to allow new plants to become established during the first year before harvesting your first crop, so wait for 12 - 18 months before you start pulling the sticks.
