Cormous perennials that are ideal for adding intense colour to herbaceous borders and prairie style planting schemes from midsummer to autumn. For best effect, pant in bold drifts in full sun or light, dappled shade in humus-rich, well-drained soils - although it will become more tolerant of drought once it has had a chance to become established. The flowers are excellent for cutting.
In this collection you will receive ten corms of each of the following four varieties (ie 40 corms).- Crocosmia 'Lucifer':
Masses of bright red flowers are produced along the top of the slightly arching spikes in midsummer. This is a vigorous plant with sword-shaped, pleated, mid-green leaves. Height to 1.2m.- Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Emily McKenzie':
Wiry, arching stems carry large, pendulous or horizontal, bright orange flowers that have reddish-purple blotches at their base from mid summer. Beautiful in bold drifts and excellent cut flowers. Height to 75cm.- Crocosmia masoniorum:
Forming dense clumps of pleated, linear foliage and tall stems that are packed with upward facing orange flowers. This cultivar will become drought tolerant once established. Height to 1.2m.- Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'George Davison':
One of the earliest montbretias into bloom each year, this cultivar produces arched branching stems of large, pale yellow flowers, which are flushed with orange above strap-shaped green leaves from midsummer. Height to 1.2m. - Garden care: Plant the corms (bulbs) in spring approximately 8-10cm deep and 10-15cm apart. Resist removing the faded foliage in autumn and cover the crown of the plant with bracken or bark chips to protect the plant against frost damage. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring, planting the divided sections 8-10cm (3-4in) deep.
