Hard-wearing and handsome tuberous perennials, which if left undisturbed, will slowly spread by underground rhizomes to form luxuriant carpets of grass-like, evergreen foliage. In autumn, upright flower spikes bear masses of small, bell-shaped flowers, followed by rounded near-black berries. They are ideal for planting beneath trees and shrubs in partially shaded positions, or for stabilising steep slopes, where their fibrous roots help prevent erosion. Originating from scrub and woodland edges throughout China and Japan, they are tolerant of most soils, but are happiest in light, moderately fertile, preferably acidic conditions where they have reliable moisture in summer. They will however become drought tolerant once established.

In each collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties.

  • Liriope muscari:Producing a prolific number of lilac-blue flower spikes on violet-flushed stems, which rise from the dense, tufted clumps of leathery, dark green foliage, this is perhaps the showiest of all the lily turfs. Ideal for adding colour to the front of the border in autumn, it is adaptable and tough, without becoming thuggish. For added interest, under-plant it with spring flowering bulbs. Height: 45cm

  • Liriope muscari 'Monroe White':A low maintenance plant that works equally well in containers or borders. It looks very effective when used to line the edges of a partially shaded pathway, or when planted throughout a woodland floor where it will add year-round interest. The larger than average, pure white flowers appear in short racemes at the top of green stalks and create a vibrant contrast to the rich green foliage. Height: 45cm

  • Liriope muscari 'Variegata':Each relatively wide, mid green leaf is edged in creamy-yellow, creating a lightness that is particularly useful for illuminating shaded positions. The colour of the violet-purple flowers, which crowd the upright spikes, appear intensified against the backdrop of this lustrous foliage. A compact cultivar that looks great when planted out in large, sweeping swathes. Height: 45cm
