From amongst the clumps of ruffled blue-green leaves, thick stems arise in early summer carrying small white flowers in dense clusters. It will gradually spread to form quite big clumps, adding textural interest and colour to the planting scheme. Particularly valuable in coastal gardens, where they can form large colonies just above the high tide mark. This decorative plant is also very useful as the leaves are edible and the flowers will attract bees to the garden.

  • Garden care: In January cover the crowns of two-year- old plants with special earthenware blanching pots or large plastic buckets, weighed down with bricks and surrounded with a mixture of well-rotted, garden compost and leaf mould. Once the blanched stems are 15-23cm (6-9in) high harvest by cutting below the crown.
