From midsummer to autumn upright stems are topped with densely packed flower spikes. The tubular, orange-red flowers open from the base of the spike and turn to yellow as they mature. The architectural silhouette of this undemanading plant is ideal for adding vertical interest to the border, and they also associate well with ornamental grasses.- Garden care:
In autumn remove and compost the faded flower spikes and apply a deep dry mulch such as pine needles around the crown of the plant. Cut back to the ground in spring to keep the foliage fresh-looking. Divide and re-plant overcrowded colonies in spring.
