This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist or well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

'Leap Frog' is easy to grow and offers year round interest, with its colourful semi-evergreen foliage that changes with the seasons. When the new leaves emerge in spring, they are a bright chartreuse yellow, each with an irregular burgundy splotch at their heart. Then, as the temperatures rise, they retain the burgundy flash but become greener, before the green takes on orange and red tones in the autumn and winter. To top off this colourful display, the foliage is crowned with bottlebrush-like spikes of creamy white flowers in late spring and early summer.

  • Garden care: Heucheras do not like dry soil. Remove tatty foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the crown of the plant in spring.
