This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: Frost hardy (may need winter protection)

  • A real treat for lovers of mint, aniseed and liquorice! Hyssops are great for adding vertical accents to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush and pointed, aromatic fresh green leaves that are a magnet for butterflies and bees. 'Morello' has loose spires of deep-pink flowers from July to October and peppermint-scented leaves. This upright, bushy perennial is perfect for the middle of a sheltered, sunny border. Try it as part of a Mediterranean scheme, with grey-leaved plants, or among ornamental grasses.

  • Garden care:
Like many frost-hardy or borderline hardy plants they dislike waterlogged conditions. Improve the drainage around the plant by incorporating organic matter especially on heavier soils. You may wish to leave the stems uncut over the winter as they provide seasonal interest and a food source for birds.
