  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately-fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: hardy annual or biennial

Strong and sturdy stems are studded with rounded buds, which start opening from the base upwards, to many-petalled, frilly looking flowers. Initially appearing as early as late spring or early summer, the flowering season can last for as long as 3 months. This is a compact, annual hollyhock, that's perfect for jazzing up the display on the patio, but it can also be used in mixed or herbaceous borders.

  • Garden care: Water well during dry spells. In autumn cut the plants back to 15cm (6in) from the ground.
