  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: half hardy (will need winter protection)

The rich tones of these stunning dahlias will add a touch of opulence and drama to the border. Traditional cottage garden favourites, their showy flowerheads will put on a magnificent display, usually flowering prolifically for a long period from midsummer, particularly if they are deadheaded regularly. They also last well after being cut. They are not fully hardy, however in many areas they can be overwintered in the group as long as they are protected by a generous, insulating mulch of compost or straw. Alternatively you should wait until the first hard frost has blackened the flowers and foliage, then lift the tubers and store them in dry sand in a frost-free place. In colder areas it may be easier to grow them in a pot so they can easily be moved to an unheated greenhouse or conservatory in winter.

In each collection you will receive one tuber of each of the following cultivars.

  • Dahlia 'Karma Prospero'
The ray-florets (petals) of this beautiful decorative dahlia are subtly streaked with creamy white and pale lilac-pink, so the overall effect is very soft. It's a dream to mix with other pastel shades as well as stronger pinks and plum. Grows to 80cm.

  • Dahlia 'Rip City'
A stunning cactus dahlia with red-black flowers and a black heart. The fully double flowers have long, narrow, pointed petals that recurve for more half their length and have a ruffled appearance. The flowers are produced from July until the first frosts. Try it in bold groups in a sunny, sheltered border. Grows to 150cm.

  • Dahlia 'Thomas A. Edison'
We wanted this decorative dahlia in our collection as its flower colour is so easy to mix with a wide range of other shades. The medium-sized blooms are crammed with magenta pink petals, which tend to be a touch paler towards their outer edges. They are also excellent for cutting, which will encourage more to form. Grows to 100cm.

  • Garden care: Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately 12cm deep, making sure the ‘eyes’ are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size without being over-crowded. While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch. In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.
