  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June and July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

From early summer, these eye-catching Aurora Series delphiniums produce impressive spires of large, well-formed flowers, which open over several weeks from the base of the inflorescence. They are invaluable for adding structural interest in cottage gardens and herbaceous borders and will look wonderful when planted in generous clumps or drifts. These cultivars are quite compact, so can also be grown in pots, while their sturdy stems and relatively small foliage makes them perfect for cutting. Grow them in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil and provide some support before the flowers get too tall.

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties, all supplied as plug plants.

  • Delphinium 'Aurora Light Blue' (Aurora Series):Firm favourites of the cottage garden, delphiniums can be used to help add structural interest to mixed or herbaceous borders with their impressive early- to midsummer flowerspikes. The 'Aurora Series' delphiniums are uniform in habit, and as the foliage is relativey small, they are also excellent for cutting. Height to 1m.
  • Delphinium 'Aurora Blue' (Aurora Series):Compact yet sturdy, the stems of this summer-flowering perennial carry smaller than average leaves, which makes the flowerspikes perfect for cutting and adding to the vase. In the border, weave them through in generous drifts and they will add form and structure that will help break up the monotony of too many rounded shapes. Height to 1m.
  • Delphinium 'Aurora Lavender' (Aurora Series):The delphiniums in the Aurora™ Series have great uniformity, as well as stout stems that are packed with summer flowers - and this makes them perfect for borders or for cutting for the vase. The colouring of this one mixes really well with other pastel shades, as well as stronger purples and blues. Height to 1m.
  • Delphinium 'Aurora White' (Aurora Series):Glowing columns of pure white flowers rise up from leafy clumps in early summer adding structure and form (as well as colour) to the border. It's an excellent variety for cutting, so you may wish to plant a few extras, which will allow for vases to be filled - without eaving any gaps in the planting scheme. Height to 1m.
  • Delphinium 'Aurora Deep Purple' (Aurora Series):White eyed deep purple flowers form impressive columns that are all relatively uniform in habit. Appearing in early summer, they look spectacular when teamed with shades of rich plum or chartreusse, while adding body to softer purples, pinks and blues. Height to 1m.

  • Garden care: Stake with bamboo canes in mid-spring. During the growing season apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks and wearing gloves cut back the faded flower-stems to a flowering side-shoot. At the end of autumn cut back and compost the faded flower stems.
