This fern is deciduous so all its fronds will die back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again each spring.

  • Position: full or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, well-drained
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This relatively large and easy to grow fern makes an elegant addition to a partially shaded border, where it's gently splaying fronds will form an open, architectural cluster. Largely evergreen, the previous years fronds will deteriorate as the worst of the winter weather takes it's toll, but in most cases, it will still maintain some colour and structural interest throughout the year.

  • Garden care: Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost into the planting hole. Cut back dead or tatty-looking foliage in early spring, taking care not to damage the newly emerging foliage.
