This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Soil: moderately-fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August and September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection in cold areas)

    Offering vertical interest as well as late colour, this showy subshrub is a valuable addition to sunny borders with freely draining soils. Each spring it forms an attractive clump of aromatic foliage, from which taper-like clusters to 20cm long are jettisoned in late summer and early autumn, each bearing a mass of tiny mauve flowers. Then, before dying back for winter, the foliage takes on rich red colouring.

  • Garden care: Cut back all the flowered shoots to their base in early spring as the buds begin to swell.
