Carpets of bright yellow, buttercup-like flowers in late January and February surrounded by ruffs of fresh green leaves. Winter aconites originate from damp woodland and shady places in Eurasia so are perfect for naturalising under deciduous shrubs and trees. They are a welcome sight in late winter as they are one of the first things into flower in the garden. Buying winter aconite bulbs 'in the green' is a great way to stop them getting dehydrated. Basically, the bulbs have been potted up in the autumn, and while they may be showing some signs of top growth, they are unlikely to show any significant root growth. They should however be planted out as soon as possible into well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil.

  • Garden care: Plant in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep on arrival.
