  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil (or loam-based potting compost with sharp sand or grit for container-grown specimens)
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection)

In each collection you will receive one tuber of each of the following cultivars:

    Eucomis bicolour
A spectacular plant, with spikes of purple-edged, pale green star-shaped flowers on purple-spotted stems in July and August, topped with a pineapple-like tuft above a rosette of wide, fleshy leaves. This distinctive, summer-flowering bulb looks stunning planted in clumps in a large, well-drained container or in a sunny, exotic-style garden. Since it's not fully hardy in frost-prone areas, it's best overwintered indoors in a cool greenhouse. Grows to 60cm.

    Eucomis comosa 'Sparkling Burgundy'
When they first emerge in spring, the leaves have a deep burgundy colour (especially when they are planted in a very sunny spot), which gradually fades to olive green as summer approaches. From mid summer, an upright flowerspike emerges from the rosette of foliage, bearing masses of small, star-like flowers. The spike is topped with a tuft of leaf-like bracts, giving it a pineapple-like appearance. A very distinctive and unusual plant, which originates from dry screes and meadows in South Africa. In colder areas, pot it up and move it to a sheltered spot or cool greenhouse during the winter. Grows to 75cm.

    Eucomis autumnalis subsp. autumnalis
The unusual flowers of this plant look great planted in clumps in the front of tropical or jungle themed borders. This variety has slender, upright spikes of greenish-white flowers that emerge from a basal rosette of strap-shaped light green leaves with wavy edges - and these flowerspikes are topped with a rounded cluster of small leaves that look like a spiky topknot. Grows to 30cm.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 12cm deep as soon as possible, allowing 20cm between each. In colder areas, provide some protection until the worst of the frosts have passed. Water freely during the growing season and sparingly during winter. Protect the crown of the plant with a dry winter mulch or overwinter indoors under glass. Top dress or repot container-grown specimens each spring.
  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
