Long, silvery catkins up to 20cm (8in) long shine out among glossy, wavy-edged, dark green leaves throughout winter. The silken tassels of this upright, evergreen shrub make a stunning feature in the winter garden.

Try Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' towards the back of a sunny shrub border, against a wall or as a windbreak in coastal areas. When it has finished its display, the dark foliage makes a lovely foil for summer-flowering shrubs.

How to care for Garrya elliptica James Roof:

Garrya thrives in well-drained soil and a sheltered position, ideally against a wall or fence to protect it from cold winds. It prefers full sun or partial shade and benefits from organic matter added to the planting hole to improve soil structure.

Water regularly during dry periods in the first year to help establish strong roots. Once mature, it requires minimal care, though cutting back dead or straggly branches in April or May will help maintain a neat shape.

After pruning, applying a mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base will help retain moisture and encourage healthy growth.

In colder areas, young plants may need some winter protection to prevent severe or prolonged frost damage.
