Gaultheria mucronata 'Mascula'

boxberry or pernettya (male)

3 litre pot £24.99
  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: acid to neutral, peaty, moist soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May and June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Nodding, urn-shaped, white flowers in May and June and shiny, spine-tipped, dark green leaves. This 'male' form of gaultheria will ensure that your 'female' plants positioned next to the male, produce a good crop of autumn berries. Compact and bushy in habit, it’s perfect for a shady woodland edge with moist, acid soil.

  • Garden care: When planting, add plenty of well-rotted leaf mould or shredded bark to the planting hole. After flowering, light prune or cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Remove suckers to help restrict growth.
  • Harmful if eaten
