Gaultheria procumbens Gaulthier Pearl ('SpecGP11') (PBR)
partridge berry or checkerberry
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: acid to neutral, peaty, moist soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
- Flowering period: May to June
- Hardiness: fully hardy
White or pale pink, urn-shaped flowers in May and June, followed by aromatic, white berries. This creeping, evergreen shrub is excellent groundcover for shady areas of the garden with moist, acid soil. It’s particularly suitable for the borders of a well used path since the glossy, dark green leaves give off a strong scent of wintergreen when crushed. - Garden care: When planting, add plenty of well-rotted leaf mould or shredded bark to the planting hole. After flowering lightly prune or cut back those shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Remove suckers to help restrict growth.
