Rosemary or thyme are often used to garnish an ice cold gin and tonic, and there are also many gin-based cocktails that include these aromatic herbs in their mix. With that in mind, this wooden planter kit may be just the thing for someone who enjoys mixing up a tipple (or two), and wants to grow their own botanicals. The kit comes with two packets of seed (1 x rosemary and 1 x thyme), as well as a compost pellet. - Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) - pop a freshly picked sprig of this into your drink to bring out all the natural botanicals.
- Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) - the aromatic leaves add a a subtle flavour when used as a swizle stick. Try pairing it with a slice of orange instead of lemon or lime.
- Growing instructions: Make the compost by placing the compost pellets in a suitable mixing container and adding 300ml of lukewarm water. Allow to stand and expand for 30-60 minutes before draining off any excess water and mixing it well. You may need another splash of water if the compost mix looks dry.
- How to plant: Nearly fill the planter with the prepared compost (you may find you have slightly more than you need), and lightly moisten before sprinkling a sparse layer of seeds (half rosemary & half thyme) on top. Cover these with a thin layer of compost and gently water using a very fine spray. Save any surplus seeds and compost to re-seed the planter in the future. The planter can be kept on a cool, bright windowsill, or grown outside on a sunny patio. Keep the compost well watered (but never waterlogged) and after a few weeks you should start to see the seedling emerge. Re-seed when appropriate by removing the old plants and top layer of compost and repeating the instructions above.
