This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth:average
  • Flowering period: January to February
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This deciduous shrub is primarily grown for its larger than average, deep orange flowers, which clothe the bare stems from mid- to late winter. It is also noted for its foliage, which puts on a good show in autumn, when it changes from green to orange and yellow. Forming a distinctive vase-shape as it matures, it adds structure and texture in the border, particularly when the stems have shed their leaves. This witch hazel is a valuable addition to the garden in autumn and winter - and it will look even better when underplanted with early flowering bulbs.

  • Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
