This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: January to February
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Clusters of ruby-red, spider-like flowers, cling to bare stems of this deciduous shrub in winter, filling the surrounding air with their light perfume. An award-winning witch hazel, it makes a lovely winter specimen for a woodland edge (or partially shaded border), but it also puts on a great show in autumn, when the green leaves turn orange, yellow and red before they fall. It's a good plant for the home florist too, as the flowering stems can be cut for the vase.

  • Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
