This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: December and January
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This easy and undemanding shrub is sought after for its autumn and winter interest. The display kicks off in autumn when the green foliage turns shades of yellow, orange and red before it is shed. Then, from midwinter, slender-petalled coppery red flowers, each lightly perfumed, appear in clusters along the length of the bare stems. After the shrub has grown to a decent size, you can start to cut some of these stems for the vase - and enjoy the scented flowers in your home.

  • Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
