This herb dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position:partial shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering Period: July to August
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Used to make Crème de Menthe, this small leaved, shade-loving mint spreads to form an aromatic carpet, which if trodden on will release its delicious scent. With that in mind, it's ideal for filling in the gaps between paving slabs, but it can also be used as a decorative covering for compost in patio pots. In summer, its tiny pinkish purple flowers are also attractive.

  • Garden care: Divide plants in autumn, but do be aware that mints can be vigorous, so unless you want it to spread, you should restrist its growth by keeping it in a large pot.
