Hippuris vulgaris
bottlebrush
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: aquatic compost
- Rate of growth: fast-growing
- Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)
With masses of soft, bottle brush-like shoots, Hippuris vulgaris makes an attractive marginal plant. In large natural ponds and lakes when grown in deep water, it’s a superb oxygenating plant, maintains clean, healthy pond water and provides protected environments for small fish and wildlife. Careful management of this aquatic plant is advised as it is a vigorous grower. - Garden care: Plant into a 5lt/10lt planting basket using aquatic compost and place on a shelf in the pond. Fill the planting basket so the crown of the plant is level with the rim. Top dress the soil with 1cm of pea gravel.
