With a compact growth habit reaching about 1m (3ft) tall, ‘Dolce Chic’ offers large, rich pink flowers that are perfect for a chic pastel border or spacious flower pot. In neutral to alkaline soils, the firm flowers on sturdy stems change colour throughout the season, starting as dark pink with a yellow centre in summer and becoming more uniformly pink as the season progresses. Suitable for part shade or full shade, this hydrangea also makes excellent cut flowers. It's worth keeping in mind however that like all the mophead hydrangeas, the flower colour will vary depending on your soils pH. Therefore if you grow it in acid soils (below pH 6.0), the flower colour will become predominantly more blue.
How to care for Hydrangea macrophylla Dolce Chic ('Hore0034') (PBR) (Rembrandt Series):
Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, adding mycorrhizal fungi (Root grow) to aid establishment. Hydrangeas do not like to dry out so keep them well watered during hot, dry weather. If they do start to suffer, soak the roots with a hose and they will usually recover. Remove faded flowerheads in spring after the danger of frosts, cutting back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds. Take out misplaced or diseased shoots. Mulch young plants with well-rotted manure or compost in spring. Once established, remove a quarter to a third of the shoots to the base of the plant.
