This pond plant is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its foliage in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose it all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Depth of water 0-10cm
  • Soil type: Deep, moist to wet, humus-rich acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: Average to fast
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

These beautiful water-loving irises are ideal for planting at the margins of a medium to large pond. In early and midsummer each branched stem is festooned with up to five, beardless, reddish purple flowers, each with yellow and white markings. 'Kermesina' is a handsome plant that is easy to grow in boggy conditions.

  • Garden care:
These plants are potted up (using a suitable aquatic compost) into aquatic pots. These pots are made of a fine mesh, which allows water to circulate through the compost, providing the plants with both oxygen and nutrients. If you are using them as a aquatic plant, they can be placed straight into the pond, however they will preform better if planted out sooner rather than later. To enhance flowering divide congested clumps every three to five years.
    • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
