This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This vigorous subshrub is very easy to grow, yet it will produce a succession of distinctively veined, hollyhock-like blooms over a really long period. It's perfect for a sheltered, sunny border with freely draining soil, and its pretty, dark pink flowers, which grow to around 7cm across, put on a really showy summer display.

  • Garden care: To prevent wind damage in exposed gardens, reduce the flowered stems by one half in autumn. In spring, after all risk of severe frosts has passed, cut it back to within 30cm (12in) of ground level. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
