  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Easy to grow and very rewarding, this annual lupin produces an abundance of upright flower spikes in summer. Each is crowded with rich blue, pea-like flowers, which have a heady perfume. They look great when planted in bold swathes through the border, but their compact habit also makes them ideal for pots. Plant more than you think you will need, as you will want to cut some for the vase.

  • Garden care: Surface-sow on a tray or pot filled with freely draining seed compost and lightly cover with a little compost or vermiculite. Place in an unheated propagator; maintain temperatures between 18-25°C, and water when necessary. Germination will usually occur around 3 weeks later, and when the seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually harden them off and plant out (30cm apart) after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, you can surface sow them outside after the frosts in a well prepared bed.
