  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, slightly acid, sandy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September

Forming bushy plants with attractive foliage, these compact annual lupins are also topped with elegant spires of pink flowers throughout the summer. These flowers are excellent for cutting, and they also have a sweet perfume that will waft through the air on a summer's day - making them perfect for planting near an entrance, path or seating area.

  • Garden care: Surface-sow on a tray or pot filled with freely draining seed compost and lightly cover with a little compost or vermiculite. Place in an unheated propagator; maintain temperatures between 18-25°C, and water when necessary. Germination will usually occur around 3 weeks later, and when the seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually harden them off and plant out (30cm apart) after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, you can surface sow them outside after the frosts in a well prepared bed.
