  • Rate of growth: average

Jaunty red and white bicoloured blooms top the upright flowerspikes of this annual lupin, filling the air with their delicious perfume throughout the summer. They make exquisite cut flowers, and are excellent additions to both mixed borders and seasonal bedding schemes. Relatively compact in stature, they will also grow quite happily in a pot on the patio.

  • Garden care: Surface-sow on a tray or pot filled with freely draining seed compost and lightly cover with a little compost or vermiculite. Place in an unheated propagator; maintain temperatures between 18-25°C, and water when necessary. Germination will usually occur around 3 weeks later, and when the seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually harden them off and plant out (30cm apart) after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, you can surface sow them outside after the frosts in a well prepared bed.
