Nandina domestica

heavenly bamboo

12 lt pot (0.6-1m) £74.99
  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Primarily grown for its attractive foliage, which emerges with a red flush in spring, and often develops a burgundy tint when the temperatures drop in autumn and winter. This elegant shrub can also produce open clusters of white, star-shaped flowers in midsummer, followed by bright red (inedible) fruits. Commonly called heavenly bamboo, it works equally well in borders or large pots, but it's happiest in a sunny, sheltered site.

  • Garden care: In mid- or late spring lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Protect from cold drying winds and low temperatures in winter.
