This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun or light shade
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average to fast
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

Our bare root hedging range offers a very low cost way of creating a screen. The plants will only available to buy (and plant) when they're completely dormant, which is typically the period between November and early April. They come with a known seed provenance, and to give them the best possible start in life, they've been grown in rich Herefordshire soil. Therefore, once planted out again in your own garden, they'll be raring to go.

It will be easy to create your own hedgerow with this wonderful collection of native plants. We have chosen them all, not only because they display unique and distinctly beautiful characteristics, but because when planted together they will form a diverse and attractive screen that will provide a haven for wildlife. This is a robust mix of plants, which can cope in most positions including coastal or exposed sites. It has traditionally been used in rural settings for centuries, however this hedge will also work well in urban areas.

Our native hedging pack contains 75 plants, (each currently approximately 60-80cm tall) and will include:

  • 25 x Crataegus monogyna (hawthorn): Fragrant, insect-friendly white flowers in May, followed by spherical, glossy, dark red fruit, and deeply lobed, glossy, dark green leaves. Currently Grows to 10m (unclipped).

  • 25 x Prunus spinosa (blackthorn): Beautiful cloudy plumes of snow-white flowers in early spring followed by rich inky-black fruits (sloes) in late summer. Grows to 3.5m (unclipped).

  • 25 x Acer campestre (field maple): This fast growing native is quite tolerant of coastal conditions and cold, exposed sites. In spring the emerging deeply lobed foliage is flushed with red, but gradually turns lush green. Grows to 8m (unclipped).

If you want a traditional farm style native hedgerow you can also add Rosa canina (dogrose) as shown in the photographs, but not included in the collection.

  • Garden care:
Plant immediately upon receipt for best results into a well prepared soil. Keep them well watered for their first year, and thereafter apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plants in early spring.
