  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Forming an attractive clump of arching yellow-green leaves, each of which has irregular green stripes along their length, this striking evergreen is ideal for larger containers, gravel gardens, or borders that have a tropical theme. It's primarily grown for its lush-looking foliage, however an added bonus is the spikes of red flowers, which appear in midsummer.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. In late spring remove any dead or damaged leaves and apply a balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted organic matter to stimulate vigorous, new growth. In frost-prone areas, over-winter container-grown specimens in a greenhouse or conservatory.
