Phormium 'Chocomint' (PBR)
New Zealand flax
- Position: full sun
- Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: July
- Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)
The mint green margins of these strappy leaves provide a fresh contrast to the deep chocolate band that runs along their length. An eye-catching evergreen, it's valuable for adding structure (as well as colour) towards the front of the border, but it also makes a handsome specimen on the patio. - Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. In late spring remove any dead or damaged leaves and apply a balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted organic matter to stimulate vigorous new growth. In frost-prone areas, over-winter container-grown specimens in a greenhouse or conservatory.
