This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: reliably damp or boggy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Forming a low fountain-like clump of semi-evergreen variegated foliage, this marginal aquatic perennial is ideal for planting in swathes around the pond edge, or for helping to illuminate boggy regions of the garden where little else will grow. Ideal for reliably boggy or wet areas, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' forms an attractive tuft of gracefully arching, narrow, sword-shaped, golden-yellow leaves adorned with olive green stripes. Tiny green/yellow flowers develop into small red berries come autumn.

Please note that this plant is also offered in aquatic pots, with a suitable soil mix, for shallow water submergence. Please see this link to view.

  • Garden care:
Reliable in wet or very moist, ‘boggy’ fertile soils, this acorus can be planted in aquatic baskets (to reduce root disturbance) in shallow water up to 5cm. Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years. Wearing gloves, comb through old or damaged foliage in late winter to tidy if necessary.
