This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil type: tolerates most reliably moist or boggy soils, or aquatic compost
  • Depth of water: 5-10cm
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This fast-growing bulrush will soon form a generous clump of slender, upright foliage, that's accompanied by cylindrical, reddish brown flowerspikes in midsummer. Its thick and fleshy rhizomes will quickly spread in shallow water, forming a dense colony around the edges of a pond. Its vigorous growth makes it unsuitable for smaller water features (opt instead for Typha minima where space is limited), but when fully established and forming large drifts, it looks pretty impressive!

  • Garden care: Lift and divide congested clumps in spring.
