  • Position: full or partial shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: March to April
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Low growing, slowly spreading plants that are ideal for providing groundcover in partially shaded sites beneath trees and shrubs. Their deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage can be plain green, but is often attractively spotted with silvery-white or pale green, sometimes so heavily that it almost covers the whole leaf. The funnel shaped flowers provide a vital, early source of nectar to bumblebees and come in shades of purples and blues, pinks and reds and sometimes white. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, they can be prone to mildew in dry conditions, so prefer a location with reliable moisture.

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties, each in a 9cm pot.

  • Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign': Often considered to be one of the best and showiest blue forms, this plain leaved, deciduous plant produces compact clusters of rich, violet-blue flowers on upright stems throughout spring. More tolerant of sun that most, the contrast between the unspotted, dark green foliage and the flower colour is very striking. Height to 35cm.

  • Pulmonaria 'Sissinghurst White': Bristly, silver spotted, green leaves remain on the plant in all but the harshest winters, creating loose clumps that are topped with pure white, funnel-shaped flowers from early to late spring. A vigorous and easily grown plant, that will help illuminate a shady corner. Height to 25cm.

  • Pulmonaria rubra : Unusually coral red flowers open up to form almost flattened discs with ruffled edges. These appear for several weeks from early spring, often just as the spotted foliage is emerging. This attractive species is a firm favourite, and is one of the first to flower in late winter. Height to 30cm.

  • Garden care: Lift and divide large clumps every three to five years after flowering or in autumn. Cut back plants affected by mildew to the ground, water and feed - the plant will regenerate and produce new leaves later in the year.
