This shrub is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil or ericaceous compost
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Masses of funnel-shaped, dark-pink flowers in May and small, oval to broadly lance-shaped, that open bright green and mature to dark green. This compact, bushy azalea is ideal for brightening the front of a shrub border with humus-rich, acid soil. Best in part shade, it copes well in sun as long as the soil is not allowed to dry out. A colourful choice for city gardens and contemporary gardens containers.

  • Garden care: Avoid planting too deeply. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring. Do not allow to dry out. Protect from strong winter winds.
  • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
