RHS award of garden merit £8.99 £6.99
Pot size 3 litre pot
3 litre pot
  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: light, moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June and July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Slender spires of rich violet flowers open from the base upwards from pink buds in early and midsummer. The perfect plant for filling gaps left by spring-flowering plants in the middle of a moist but well-drained herbaceous border, it will flourish in sun or light dappled shade - and the flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and bees.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring.
