Sarracenia leucophylla

fly killing pitcher plant

9cm pot £14.99
  • Position: bright filtered or direct sunlight
  • Soil: a specialist carnivorous compost, or low-nutrient, moist but freely draining acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: half hardy (may need winter protection)

This carnivorous plant produces decorative pitchers that secrete a nectar to attract insects. Once they are trapped inside, the insects can't escape, and the plant can top up its nutrient levels by digesting them. These curious and exotic-looking plants can be grown outside in milder regions, and while they should never be planted in waterlogged conditions, they could be planted in reliably moist soil on the upper edges of a pond margin.

  • Garden care : In colder areas, gently lift the plants and overwinter them in a conservatory or glasshouse. They do not naturally form particularly vigorous roots, so they could be kept in pots and plunged into the ground during the warmer months, then lifted again when tempretures drop.
