    • Flowering period: July to September
    • Hardiness: fully hardy

Phlox are long-lived and showy perennials, flowering for a long period from summer to early or mid-autumn, filling the air with their sweet scent. Their colourful trusses will also last well in the vase after being cut. Mainly originating from North America, where they colonise reliably moist habitats, they prefer a rich soil in full sun or lightly dappled shade. Each year they have 2 flushes of flowers from each cluster, but they should be dead-headed promptly after the second flush to avoid the appearance of unwanted seedlings. Over-large clumps can be lifted and divided every 3 to 5 years in spring or autumn. Phlox are also attractive to bees and butrterflies. Supplied as pot-grown 9cm plants.

In each collection you will receive 1 plant each of the following. They are all supplied in 9cm pots.

      Phlox paniculata 'Starfire'
Winner of the prestigious RHS AGM award, this phlox has upright, dark purple stems clothed with deep green foliage that emerges in spring with a red flush. This provides a marvellous contrast for the flat-faced, bright cherry-red fragrant flowers, which open from dark buds to form very showy multifloweredheads. Grows to 90cm.

      Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise'
This variety bears fabulous trusses of fragrant, hydrangea-like violet flowers with broad petals and deep purple eyes. They appear from July to August on tall stems with narrow, toothed, mid-green leaves. This pretty perennial wil tolerate full sun or partial shade, but like all phlox, does not like soil that dries out in summer. Try it as part of a 'cool' planting scheme based on blue shades. Grows to 1.2m.

      Phlox paniculata 'Rembrandt'
Ideal for illuminating areas of light shade, the milky white flowers also look luminous at night and will make beautiful additions to the vase after being cut. Try to plant them near a window or pathway to take full advantage of their delicious perfume. Grows to 90cm.

    • Garden care: Support with bamboo canes, brushwood or ring stakes before the flowers appear. Phlox are greedy plants, so apply a mulch 5-7cm (2-3in) deep of well-rotted garden compost or manure in early spring. Shear off the spent flowers to prevent reseeding. If the leaves show signs of powdery mildew, cut down to the ground and dispose of the affected foliage, but do not compost it. Clear away the debris around the plant to reduce the chances of reinfection. Cut down to the ground in autumn. Lift and divide large clumps in autumn or spring.
