It is lovely to see daffodils growing outside as they herald the start of spring. Daffodils are making a resurgence in the garden fashion stakes for all things home grown. There is a large volume of daffodils grown in the fens of Lincolnshire as well as Cornwall in the UK. I have been several times to visit the growers and look at what’s good and what’s not in the range of daffodils and these three cultivars stood out to me as they have good fragrance as well as looking great.

Daffodils are easy to grow but the most common cause of daffodils failing to flowers is they are planted to shallow as a guide plant them one and a half times the depth of the bulb. And they will grow best in full sun or partial shade. They can be planted in September and October for best spring performance as they will start to develop roots in the autumn ready to flower in the spring.

    Narcissus 'Canaliculatus'
Plant this at the front of your border, in a pot or in your window boxes where you can enjoy the small, scented flowers up close. This variety flowers in March and April producing several flowers on each stem so they are really colourful. The flowers have white petals with a small yellow cup and they look best in bold clumps. Grows to 15cm.

    Narcissus 'Silver Chimes'
Up to 10 nodding, milky-white blooms per stem, each with a pale yellow trumpet in April. They are deliciously fragrant too, so ideal for adding a splash of colour in sun or in the light dappled shade of a woodland edge. Excellent as a cutflower. Grows to 30cm.

    Narcissus ‘Curlew’
A delightful, multiheaded daffodil which produces very fragrant flowers in late April. Unlike most other daffodils, the flower colour will change as they age, so although the outer petals are a pure creamy-white, the long central trumpet opens yellow and will gradually fade to match. It is a vigorous variety, and each single bulb should soon multiply so its a good one for naturalising. Winner of an ‘RHS AGM’. Excellentas a cutflower. Grows to 30cm.
