This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (will need winter protection in colder areas)

A compact and bushy perennial that will often flower non-stop throughout the summer, particularly if the spent flowers are removed promptly. It looks very pretty at the front of a sunny border and will add interest to mixed, potted arrangements. Closely related to V. rigida (to which it makes a fine companion) it is relatively hardy, but it may need winter protection in colder areas.

  • Garden care: In areas prone to frost apply a deep, dry winter mulch around the crown of the plant. Avoid excessive winter wet.
