    Create a naturalistic swathe with these plants and they will bring lots of colour, form and movement to the border for several months from midsummer. As the season progresses, the grass takes on more autumnal tones, which acts as the perfect foil for the richly coloured flowers. For best results plant them in a sunny spot. Each collection contains one of each of the following plants, all supplied in 9cm pots.

  • Sanguisorba officinalis 'Red Thunder': One of Piet Oudolf's favourites. In spring the deciduous feathery, green foliage emerges and forms attractive groundcover, but it is the summer when the unusual red flowers top the slender, upright sems that it really becomes a head-turner. Perfect for prairie style planting schemes, as it looks righ at home swaying sea of grasses. bees. Grows to 1.2m.

  • Panicum virgatum Rehbraun: Pendent clusters of tiny, purple-green spikelets and upright mid-green leaves turning rich reddish-purple in autumn. This deciduous ornamental grass is renowned for its striking autumn colour. One of our recommended pants it's perfect for prividing vertical interest in a sunny, well-drained new perennial border. Grows to 1m.

  • Agastache 'Blackadder' Hyssops are great for adding height to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush, and pointed, aromatic fresh green leaves that are attractive to butterflies. They are short-lived though, and may need replacing every few years, especially after a cold or wet winter. 'Blackadder' has smoky, violet flowers on long spires from July to October. Try it as part of a Mediterranean scheme or in a sunny, well-drained border among ornamental grasses. Grows to 90cm.
