This plant dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: vigorous
  • Flowering period: September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This humulus was bred by the hop research centre Hüll Hallertau in Germany and is fast becoming the favourite variety grown for beer in Europe. It is also a widely grown variety in the USA, being a hop with a clean bitterness and a subtle citrus flavour. As a plant it is a vigorous deciduous twining climber, with light green deeply lobed leaves and cone-like fragrant flowers, followed by the characteristic hops which are attractive as they are, or more importantly perhaps, great for beer making!

  • Garden care: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and tie in the twining shoots around the base of the support. Cut back to ground level in the spring and mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost.
  • Pets: TOXIC if eaten; Humans: Skin irritant/allergen
