This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Fast
  • Flowering period: March
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

Sought-after for its brilliant white bark, this vigorous, deciduous tree has yellowy brown catkins in spring and dark green, ovate leaves that turn butter yellow in autumn. The warm chestnut brown stem colour of the west Himalayan birch gradually turns white with age (once the tree is around 8 years old). In time it will grow into a spectacular tree that will create an elegant garden specimen or is equally stunning planted as a group, underplanted with early flowering spring bulbs.

  • Garden care:
Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake well.
